Jerry - Original Butterfly Oil Painting on 8" Round Canvas

Some pieces are not here to shout across the room. Jerry would rather make you lean in.

Jerry is an 8" original oil painting on round canvas — a small butterfly with a bold black body, flashes of turquoise, pastel green, and yellow-green on the wings, and details you miss if you only do the polite little wall glance.

From a distance, he reads as a dark butterfly. Up close, that changes. The colors start showing up. The wing texture comes forward. The black body has more depth than it first admits. Slightly dramatic of him, but fair.

I painted Jerry from a real butterfly photo, but the name came later, after he’d already started looking like himself. There was no grand reason. He just looked like Jerry.

The black body was the trickiest part to paint. One flat black would have made him look like a cutout, which would have been rude after all that wing color. Small color shifts helped him feel rounded and alive — like the canvas has been nice, but he may have other plans.

The round canvas suits him. It keeps the whole thing close and contained, like a little frame around the moment.

Because he’s only 8", Jerry works best somewhere you won’t rush past him. Not the wall you pass while carrying laundry at speed. More the little place your eyes wander when you finally sit down and let your brain stop making lists for once.

He’s the kind of piece you buy because you like your home having small discoveries in it. Some things are better when they take a second to reveal themselves.

A tiny miracle with wings, and a name that somehow makes complete sense.
