The story behind the painting

The red is the first thing you notice. Lucy knows this and is not pretending otherwise.

Lucy is an 8" original oil painting on round canvas — a small moth with striking red markings, patterned wings, a fuzzy little body, and a deep green background that keeps everything close.

I painted Lucy from a real moth photo, and the red markings were what pulled me in first. Apparently moths have been keeping their better outfits from me. Suddenly there’s this flash of color, and there goes your tidy opinion.

She started to feel real when the furry body went in. That was the moment she stopped being “moth shape, wing pattern, yes yes” and became Lucy. If you were standing beside me in the studio, I’d point out the wing details first. They’re the bit worth getting close for.
