I painted Lucy from a real moth photo, and the red markings were what pulled me in first. Apparently moths have been keeping their better outfits from me. Suddenly there’s this flash of color, and there goes your tidy opinion.

She started to feel real when the furry body went in. That was the moment she stopped being “moth shape, wing pattern, yes yes” and became Lucy. If you were standing beside me in the studio, I’d point out the wing details first. They’re the bit worth getting close for.

Lucy is small, round, and ready to hang, so she doesn’t need a dramatic wall or a full furniture shuffle. She needs somewhere you’ll actually get near her. A place where the red catches your eye first, and then the details start showing up.
